ROUTE 66 MAGAZINE
Memories From the Mother Road Journal
|
By reader request, this is the first in a series of reprints from the Mother Road Journal – both to honor the writer’s and nostalgia from the pages of the first International publication dedicated to The Mother Road.
|
- after two years of planning - a new publication debuted on the American scene. This was a “labor of love” publication devoted to one of the greatest highways in the world - Route 66. Dedicated to “The Route of Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow.” The Mother Road Journal sought to provide the Route 66 aficionado with a source of information about happenings along the Road, with mile-by-mile driving instructions. Through the pages of the Journal the term Roadie was born as a label for those of us who love the Road and travel it at every opportunity.
This first article was chosen both for its wonderful narrative of a trip from Illinois to California and to honor one of the most beloved people of the Road, Cheryl Cory. Cheryl passed away in 2001, but for all of us who knew her and her husband Earl, she was the epitome of a Roadie. Cheryl loved the Road and would promote it at every opportunity, and those who visited with her and saw her infectious smile would instantly become swept up in the wonder of Route 66.
The following originally appeared in the April 1993 (number 8) issue of The Mother Road Journal, so please remember some of the places mentioned may have closed.

Notes:
The “Route 66 Magazine” staff (Paul Taylor, Sandi Taylor and Bob Moore) were kind enough to dedicate the 2001 summer edition to Cheryl and also printed her first story mentioned above in the Winter 2002/2003 issue. (This first story is chapter one in my tribute).
The “Old Route 66 Association of Texas” June 2001 issue was dedicated to Cheryl. Friends Delbert and Ruth Trew put that newsletter together. The March 2001 issue featured an article about our visit to Texas in December 2000.
“On the Road”, the Oklahoma Route 66 Association newsletter had an article written by friend Cheryl Nowka.
The “Weatherford, Oklahoma Daily News” had an article on Lucille Hamons death and also spoke of Cheryl. The article was written by Robin Hoffman who attended the July 2001 memorial for Lucille and Cheryl on old highway 66 in Hydro, Oklahoma.
The beautiful cake pictured above was given to us by good friend Bernadette Hall celebrating the beginning of one of our Route 66 adventures.
Thanks to all.
