One of them used to write for Vette Vues magazine. He also had been a good friend of Kermit Parks who wrote articles about the TV series for Vette Vues. He now had Kermit’s white Corvette which was used in some publicity shots. Kermit and this guy drove in the Vette to the Route 66 TV Show Reunion in FL. The Vette has been repainted but the doors are still intact with the autographs of George and Marty. The other guy is a personal friend of George Maharis from the late 50s. He also was a stand in for Martin Milner in the TV series during the Corbett years. Had some great stories to share. We will be getting together with both of these guys later in the weekend.

After a late birthday celebration with friends for a noted author of the Mother Road we headed back to Seligman. It was sad to know that this was the last time we would be in Williams for a while. :(

This morning we started out the day watching the Angel Delgadillo story. What a great video! And what a great way to begin the weekend’s festivities. After watching the Angel video we headed for the barber shop to tell him what a great job they did on it. We got autographs of Angel and Juan on the video box, along with all the family members. Told them it was a great way to start the AZ Fun Run since Angel had started the Route 66 movement.

Next stop was registration for the event. We picked up our package that included a great license tag with our number on it (160), information about all the events happening and our tee shirts. We then went and checked out all the vendors and shops, had to see if there was anything I just had to have. We kept running into old friends from years past. It was such a feeling of family, Route 66 family. We were a bit hungry so we headed over to the Copper Cart restaurant for lunch. We were sitting there and in walks a new friend from our Route 66 list, Guy Randall. We had a very enjoyable lunch and conversation. We will meet more friends from this list later.

Route 66 eGroup Gathering

This is just part of the Route 66 eList folks that we met over the years. Cheryl organized a group meeting in Seligman during the Fun Run and it was lots off fun!

Part of the group in Kingman during the Route 66 Arizona Fun Run.

Route 66 eGroup Gathering

We made our way over to the Snow Cap Drive In where we were about to be treated by a family band, the Delgadillo Brothers. Some of the brothers are no longer living in town and some of the children filled in. They actually played pretty good, considering they only play together once a year. If the brothers had not formed an orchestra years ago who knows what the fate of Route 66 and Seligman might have been.

We then took Guy over to meet another friend from the list, Peter Harpin. We could see that he was in good hands so we left him there. We had to go feed the kitty so we went back to the house for a bit. We also wanted to catch some of the live broadcast from Williams on KRTE, the Voice of Route 66. Our friends Bob and Paul were holding down the microphones. They did a special request for me. ;) I then called in to thank them and gave them a report on what was happening in Seligman. They were going to be talking to anyone that happened by the radio station. I was sad that I couldn’t go. :( But I had other commitments in Seligman.

eGroup Badge

Cheryl made up these pretty cool little badges for all the E Group members that were to meet at the 2001 Route 66 Arizona Fun Run. She sent out quite a few in the mail beforehand. That was the idea so folks could spot each other.

One of those commitments was a meeting of all list members that were in Seligman that night. For those that are unfamiliar with what a list group is, it is a group of folks that have the same interest in something, Route 66, and we exchange stories, pictures, road trips and such via email. We had met several folks from the list along the way. This would be the first meeting of more than one or two members. I even made up little badges for the event so we would know each other if we ran into one another before the meeting. We all met at the gazebo across from the Copper Cart. In attendance was Guy Randall, Peter Harpin. Glenn Sturm, Ed Weider, Jan Fuller and the Roadcorys. We even had a surprise guest who just got an email address, but no computer yet, Jeff Meyer and some friends of his from SLC (I’m sorry I can’t remember their names :( ) It was nice to be able to put a face to an email address. We all visited for a while and enjoyed each others company. It was pretty cold and windy and a few of us were not prepared so we didn’t stay very long. We all were going to be in Kingman the next day and knew we would see each other again. Except for Guy, who would have to go home the next day. We tried our best to get him to play hooky, even gave him several good excuses. Peter, Guy and the Roadcorys went to the Copper Cart for dinner.

After dinner we headed out to check out all the activities that were going on. There were plenty of them. There was a street dance at the gazebo and also a dance at the Snow Cap. There was a concert at the HS, John Stewart was performing. We didn’t make it over to that, but heard he did a good show. There was also a silent auction at the Catholic Church put on by the Women’s Club. They also had wine and cheese. There was a painting of the Corner Bar that I wanted to bid on so we went over there for a bit. Didn’t win. Also earlier there was the Miss Route 66 Pageant. It was won by Katy Delgadillo, granddaughter of Juan. There was also lots of cruising and showing off of cars. I must say there were some beauties.

While walking around we ran into a friend that we haven’t seen since the ‘97 Fun Run, Dan Ross. We ended up back at the house with him and the two guys we met last night. Earl finally got to show his collection of stuff from the Route 66 TV show to someone. They also brought stuff over. It was a very enjoyable and informative night. It’s nice to know there are other TV fanatics out there besides Earl. ;)

Cheryl in Corvette

Great shot of Cheryl sitting in old friend Dan Ross’s 1962 Corvette at the Fun Run. This corvette is similar to my 1962 which was Roman Red in color.

In the morning we got going fairly early so we could line up in a pretty good location, we ended up about in the middle. The day was beautiful. The clouds and the wind were gone. It was a nice comfortable temperature. The townspeople were lining the streets with their lawn chairs and BBQs, it was a festive atmosphere. This is the BIG event for Seligman and everyone supports it.
