HI! Route 66ers!

My name is Cheryl Cory. My husband is the one that got me interested in Route 66. And now I’m the obsessed one. He grew up on the TV series and always had the dream of living like Tod and Buz. He even had the ‘62 Corvette, wasn’t Fawn Beige though. We did live like them, somewhat, but without the vette. We both quit our government jobs and went traveling in a motorhome for 2 years. Had a lot of fun and many experiences.

We’ve been living in a motorhome since 1984. Earl works in construction and we were lucky enough to follow the Mother Road while moving from job to job. Now Earl is semi-retired and usually only works a few months in the summer and we explore the old highway during the winter. It’s the best of both worlds.

We have traveled the Route from Funks Grove IL to Rancho Cucamonga CA. We’re fortunate that we can usually park in one spot and go 100 miles in each direction, move to a new camp and do it all over again. Not rushed by the constraints of a 2 week vacation. It’s great! We’ve met some wonderful people! All of the icons of the road, both past and present. When we return to our beloved road we are returning to our family. Seems the people we’ve met are more happy to see us than real family. =)

We collect many different things, most of them small due to our limited space. Postcards, matchbooks, stickers, etc. I’ve written a few articles that Bob Moore so graciously accepted for printing in his Mother Road Journal. Also a few other newspaper types. I plan to one day write a book of some sort. Probably won’t do that until I’m no longer able to travel.

Nuff said for now. Becky, I’ll let you figure out where you want to put us in your stats. We are currently in the state of MT, but are official residents of WY. For anyone that might be interested, you can see what we look like on Lucille’s website:

If you see us out there, be sure to say HI!
Happy Motoring!

Subject: Lessons

What a crazy, and interesting, few days it has been on this list. I hope that we all have possibly gained something from all this. Here are my thoughts and reflections. Route 66 is a community and as such all of the entities that make up the Mother Road should be treated as family. First I must say a few things to Tim and Jim. If it weren’t for Michael Wallis and the TV series there probably would not be the resurgence of interest. Reading their writings I experienced many emotions. Déjà vu from my own trips along the route. Anger at the poor choice of words and brutal thoughts passed on to this list. It would be wise to check out who is on a mailing list before inserting foot in mouth. For an author there were many mistakes made. I’m sure they’ve learned. Nuff said.

Back to my thoughts on this all being a family. All you have to do is look at yourself. We have all been grouchy or had a really bad day, had BO, and looked like a dork at one time or another. And no matter how nice someone is, there’s nothing that can be done about it. Let’s face it; this is what we love about all the colorful people along Main Street America. They’re real human beings. They’re not afraid to be who they are. Most of my real family doesn’t “get” my interest in the Mother Road. This week has finally brought a way for me to explain it to them. It’s something you can count on. You can count on an old surviving business finally giving up and closing somewhere along the road. You can count on a new, more modern business springing up and selling the 90s version of tourist trap junk. You can count on old abandoned businesses crumbling and blowing away. You can count on an old timer dying. You can always count on an adventure and meeting new people.

Thanks for listening.
Cheryl

Happy 2 Gs 66ers!

We had our first significant snow today. Significant in that it stuck to the ground. Warmed up some so am not going to complain. We spent our day watching various 66 videos, since we can’t be in Williams AZ to party with friends. We just finished a great BBQd lobster dinner and are sipping champagne in our Route 66 flutes. Now we are watching the various programs on TV and waiting for the neighbors to start their fireworks display. The fireworks are legal here in MT for New Year’s. He’s been practicing since Christmas and it should be a good display. Cheers!

Happy 2000! Cheryl & Earl Cory in Polson MT
